DataPivot’s LiveFire DR is named after the military procedure of using your equipment – in this case hardware/software - in a simulated Disaster/Ransomware scenario. LiveFire DR Ransomware Readiness provides organizations several critical components to prepare, combat and, if necessary, respond to Ransomware.

1)      Testing of the anomaly alerts within your data protection application (e.g., Commvault).  Take advantage of these built-in features that are able to detect anomalies such as data deletion requests or unexpected large download activity.

2)      Testing of one-way firewalls, credential handshakes and other designs meant to separate the Data Protection team from the 3rd copy of the data - a tertiary copy of last resort.

3)      Testing of Immutable storage. For many organizations, immutable storage is a new concept that has been put in place for Ransomware.  It’s important to confirm that the immutability is working and that you can recover.

4)      Testing the ability to recover data.

5)      Understanding the Support Process. Some data protection vendors such as Commvault have a dedicated Support team to triage Ransomware cases.

6)      Documenting the process. The last thing you want to do is scramble to find out when the last good backup was, how to access the offsite Media Agent secured with different credentials and how to recover from immutable storage.  It’s critical to document the process so your team can recover quickly.

From a data protection perspective, the best ways to mitigate the risks of Ransomware are to implement and optimize the tools already in place with your backup application to detect anomalies.  If Ransomware has been detected, time is of the essence to respond. The team responsible for data protection needs to know that they can recover the data including what the Recovery Point (last good backup) is.
